There are numerous historical copper mines located within the EPM, illustrated above. The most significant of these is the Fairfield Open Pit, and the Double Oxide Mine. Mining at Fairfield concentrated on oxide copper ore. The Company has trucked approx 12,000 tonnes from the Fairfield Mine at an average grade 5%Cu of stockpiled ore to its Copper Sulphate production plant at Mt Norma.
Double Oxide near to the southern boundary of the EPM and at the South Eastern strike of Southern Rocklands, was well known in the district for the production of native copper. The mine was privately owned and operated up to 1991.
The ore comprised massive native copper in clays. Mining was carried out in an open pit and in a small underground operation. Records of production have not been kept. However, from local sources, a 900 tonne parcel of underground ore, 360 tonnes of copper was reported. |
